In der Studie (820 Patienten) kommt heraus, dass sich die Nackenschmerzen unter einer Lasertherapie zu 69 Prozent häufiger bessern als unter Placebo (Relatives Risiko RR 1,69; 95-Prozent-Konfidenzintervall 1,22-2,33). In fünf Studien, in denen die Besserung kategorisch erfasst wurde, war die Lasertherapie vierfach häufiger wirksam (RR 4,05; 2,74-5,98).

In den anderen elf Studien wurde die Schmerzlinderung mit visuellen Analogskalen gemessen. Der Vorteil der LLLT betrug 19,86 mm (10,04 mm - 29,68 mm), was durchaus ein klinisch relevanter Unterschied ist. Und nach den Ergebnissen einer Studie hielt die Wirkung bis zu 22 Wochen an

Erste medizinische Anwendungen der Lasertechnik gab es bereits wenige Jahre nach der Erfindung des Lasers im Jahre 1960. So untersuchte Endre Mester bereits im Jahre 1963 an der Semmelweis Universität in Budapest den Einfluss von Laserstrahlung auf Gewebe insbesondere im Hinblick auf eine mögliche karzinogene Wirkung der Laserstrahlung. Dazu bestrahlte er Mäuse an Hautstellen, welche vorher durch Rasieren der Haare zugänglich gemacht wurden. Bei seinen Experimenten fand er nicht nur, dass die untersuchten Laser keine karzinogene Wirkung hatten, sondern auch, dass die Haare der Mäuse in der Behandlungsgruppe deutlich schneller regenerierten als in der Kontrollgruppe. In weiteren Untersuchungen fand er auch eine verbesserte Epithelisation schlecht heilender Wunden. Mester veröffentlichte seine Ergebnisse ab 1967 in mehreren Publikationen. Diese Studien gelten heute als der Ausgangspunkt und erster Nachweis der LLLT.
